Year Five Autumn Term

This resource supports the learning of number, place value, decimals, addition and money for primary children from nine to ten years of age. Two detailed weekly plans contain differentiated activities, guided and independent tasks and a list of resources required for each lesson. Objectives covered in the lessons include:

Week One

  • Understand place value in 5-digit numbers
  • Place 5-digit numbers on a line
  • Order and compare 5-digit numbers
  • Add and subtract 1, 10, 100, 1000, 10,000
  • Use written addition to add pairs of 4 digit numbers and pairs of 5-digit numbers
  • Methods used include, expanded and compact column addition

Week Two

  • Understand place value in numbers with two decimal places; divide by 10 and 100 to give answers with two decimal places
  • Multiply numbers with 2 decimals by 10 and by 100
  • Place two-place decimal numbers on a number line
  • Compare and order numbers with two decimal places
  • Add amounts of money using column addition
  • Use using rounding to check answers.
  • Methods used include place value grids, expanded and compact column addition
