What Does the Fox Say?

This activity uses a humorous video to raise a serious question: can science tell us what animals are saying, and interpret their emotions? The Bow-lingual dog translator claims to detect animal emotions by analysing bark sounds waves. Students use research evidence to decide whether the device does what it claims.

Learning objectives:

*Apply knowledge about sound waves

*Construct and present an oral or written argument supported by empirical evidence and scientific reasoning to decide whether there is enough evidence to support the claim that a device can interpret dog barks

Curriculum links:

Key Stage Three:

*Working Scientifically: present reasoned explanations, including explaining data in relation to predictions and hypotheses.

*Waves – frequencies of sound waves, measured in hertz (Hz).

GCSE Combined Science subject content:

*Working Scientifically: Analysis and evaluation – presenting reasoned explanations including relating data to hypotheses.

*Waves in matter – describe wave motion in terms of amplitude, wavelength, frequency and period.
