Horse Manure Crisis

In this task students analyse a key prediction made during an environmental crisis on the streets of London; that they would be nine foot deep with horse manure within 50 years. Students research any required data, make estimates and perform calculations to determine the reasonableness of the prediction. They also reflect on the process of mathematical modelling involved in the prediction, and the possible limitations of that process. Calculators or spreadsheets are required and internet access could be beneficial. The task may be suitable for group work.

The Great Horse Manure Crisis: Teacher guidance provides a brief overview of the topic under consideration and suggests possible uses within the teaching situation

Horse Manure Crisis: Activity sheet gives the historical background for this problem. There are links to documents available on the internet which could be useful for students to investigate. Suggestions are provided for introducing the mathematical model and the type of assumptions and estimates which need to be made. Some of the limitations of the model are listed.
