Fractions: Year Five

This series of interactive excel sheets aimed at Year Five students explores fractions. Answers can be checked each time and new questions generated at the click of a button.

The first sheet gives a series of ’mixed numbers’ (or ‘mixed fractions’) and helps to demonstrate how to convert these to ‘top heavy’ or (‘improper’) fractions.

The second sheet gives six pairs of mixed and improper fractions. Given one, students have to state the fraction in the other form.

Sheet three contains two rows of equivalent fractions, with missing digits. Students have to fill in the blanks of the randomly generated fractions, which can be placed in order at the click of a button.

In the fourth sheet students have to arrange a series of six fractions in ascending order. In the following sheet students have to order a set of six decimal numbers. To help students each number appears on a number line at the top of the page as each value is placed in order.

In the next three sheets students have to state the value the arrow is pointing at on a number line. To change the level of challenge the half, quarter and eighth markings can be revealed or hidden. In the second sheet third, sixth and twelfth markings can be shown, the third sheet can display fifths, tenths and twentieths.

The following sheet represents a number in a diagram from which students have to state the value as a fraction out of one hundred, a simplified fraction, a decimals and a percentage.

The final sheet contains a colourful fraction wall.
