Fault detectors using circles

This resource from the IET Faraday programme, supported by MEI and Tomorrow's Engineers, provides students with  the opportunity to explore circle area, accuracy of measure, percentages and data handling by investigating defects in steel production.

"A company has invented a system to find defects in hot steel bars. The hot cylindrical bar must pass through a defect detector which is shaped like a ring. To work properly the bar must fill between 60 to 80% of the area inside the detector ring."

The resource includes a presentation that introduces the task and a series of questions for students to explore. The activity overview includes classroom notes, discussion points, extension activity suggestions, answers and details of the curriculum content covered.
