Your numbers divided

In this TEMI resource, a mathematical 'magic trick' is used to explore divisors, prime numbers and prime factorisation.

In the trick, the teacher invites students to type a random three digit number into their calculators. To make the task of predicting the divisors of this number even more difficult, students are then asked to enter the same three digits into their calculator again, making a six-digit number. The teacher will then attempt to guess three factors of the numbers randomly generated by the students. Is it divisible by 7? By 11? By 13?

The teacher guidance includes a detailed explanation of the mathematics involved, the time and materials required, suggestions for the delivery of the lesson and links to an online prime factor calculator and a video of the magic trick.
