Mini lectures: cosmology

This animated video describes how Einstein’s field equations led to the cosmological constant, which was later shown to be incorrect.  However, Friedmann and Lemaitre found solutions to Einstein’s equations, if the universe was still expanding.  Hubble found evidence from the red-shift of galaxies that the universe was expanding and that it must have had an origin – this later became known as The Big Band Theory. The developmental periods of the universe are explained: inflation to the transparent universe and the origins of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation.  Dark matter and dark energy are described, with their proportions in the universe compared to normal matter.
