Sloping triangle

In this resource scalene triangles are drawn on a square grid. The challenge is to find the area of the triangle.

On each student worksheet there is a different triangle, but the solutions all have something in common.

One way to find the area is to enclose the triangle in a right-angled triangle, and to split the area outside the original triangle into two further right-angled triangles and a rectangle.

An alternative method is to shear the triangle twice and transform it into a right angled triangle. This method involves calculating the distance between two parallel lines, determined by one of the sides of the original triangle and a parallel line drawn through the vertex of the remaining point.
