Solving linear equations in one variable

This resource develops the concept of solving equations where the unknown appears once or more than once.

This lesson develops solving linear equations in one variable with rational number coefficients. Additionally, collecting terms, expanding expressions, and categorising linear equations according to the number of solutions is covered.

There is a matching exercise where equations and related statements must be classified as ‘sometimes true’, ‘always true’ or ‘never true’.

The lesson assumes familiarity with collecting algebraic terms and solving equations with x on one side of the equals sign.

This is a concept development lesson from the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham. Further information on the collection is given here.
