Printing tickets
This resource features a task that involves modelling a practical situation using functions and then representing this with a graph.
Students are presented with a situation where tickets are to be printed for a show. Two companies give costings in terms of words. Students must model the situation using functions, draw graphs for each, and then evaluate the number of tickets where the cost is the same from each company.
This task is from the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham. A full rubric is given for the task, together with examples of student work and suggestions for helping students overcome misconceptions. Further information on the collection is given here.
