Representing: road race

This problem solving resource is intended to help students with recognizing and using proportional relationships, including through the use of graphs

Students are given information about a road race. They are presented with a map and information about the speeds of two runners. The race consists of four laps of the route. The position of runners must be marked on the map for one hour into the race. Students then go on to work out if one runner will ‘lap’ the other runner at some point in the race.

Examples of student work are provided. These are used for peer assessment and identifying misconceptions.

This is a problem solving lesson from the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham. Further information on the collection is given here.
