Triangular frameworks

This task considers using metal rods to make a triangular framework. The metal rods have lengths that are whole numbers. Students must work out how many triangular frameworks can be made with the longest side being 7 metres. The solution involves being methodical in listing examples, and using inequalities to represent the situation.

The resource comes with both scored and unscored student work. This is useful for peer assessment and ironing out misconceptions. A detailed rubric is provided for the task.

This is a short task lesson from the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham. Further information on the collection is given here.
