Sampling and estimating: counting trees

This is a problem solving lesson where students develop their understanding of the following areas:

  • Solve simple problems involving ratio and direct proportion.
  • Choose an appropriate sampling method.
  • Collect discrete data and record them using a frequency table.

A sheet representing a tree farm shows new trees with a circle, and old trees with a triangle. The task is to estimate the number of each type of tree on the farm, without counting the entire sheet. In order to do this, student must choose and appropriate sampling method and use ideas of direct proportion. Sample work is provided to provide for peer assessment and discussion.
