Devising a measure: correlation

This problem solving lesson is designed to assess how well students understand strength of correlation.

The problem looks at some scatter diagrams related to a cinema. The owner is looking to see if there is a correlation between:

  • Temperature and ice creams sold
  • Length of movie and ticket sales
  • Litres of soda sold and numbers of snacks sold

Students must decide how strong the correlation is in each case. A key feature of the lesson is that different examples of student work are available to use for peer assessment, including some novel approaches together with looking at the distance of points from the line of best fit.

This is a problem solving lesson from the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham. Further information on the collection is given here.
