Security camera

This task is designed to help you assess how well students are able to:

  • Construct lines of sight for the visibility of a camera
  • Find and compare the areas of triangles and quadrilaterals
  • Calculate and compare percentages and/or fractions of areas

A shop owner has installed a security camera to try and prevent shop lifting. A diagram is presented showing the position of ten people in the shop. The first task is to determine which people the camera can see.

The shop keeper claims that only 15% of the shop can’t be seen by the camera. Students must show that the shop keeper is correct.

Students must then choose their own location for the camera, optimising how much of the shop the camera can see.

This task is from the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham.
