Taxi cabs

This task is designed to assess how well students understand calculations in a practical context.

The task is set in the context of organising a trip for 75 people, where two types of taxi are available:
A small taxi costs $40 for the trip and holds up to 4 people.
A large taxi costs $63 for the trip and holds up to 7 people.

The task is to work out how many of each type of taxi should be ordered to keep the cost as low as possible.

This task is from the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham. A full rubric is given for the task, together with examples of student work and suggestions for helping students overcome misconceptions. Further information on the collection is given here.
