Substance

This progression toolkit develops understanding of the key concept of substance, as part of a topic on substances and mixtures. This key concept helps to build broader understanding about substances and properties, which is one of the big ideas of science education at ages 11-14.

It includes diagnostic questions to identify quickly where your students are in their conceptual progression and response activities to move student understanding forwards, embedded within a research-informed progression pathway.

The toolkit has been developed from the best available research evidence on learning pathways, common student misunderstandings, effective formative assessment and adaptive teaching approaches.

This resource is part of the Best Evidence Science Teaching collection.
