Lesson 1 – The greenhouse effect and global warming

The aim of the lesson is to show the importance of the greenhouse effect via a number of activities. This is the first lesson in a sequence of three and is aimed at 14-16 year old students- it links well to upper secondary level exam specifications.

This lesson  has a variety of activities including demonstrating the effect of different greenhouse gases and how they absorb energy in the infra-red region, while students are able to develop and re-purpose learning materials for a younger age group.

Expected outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of the greenhouse effect
  • Explain the processes involved in creating the greenhouse effect
  • Interpret data and comment on the quality of data provided
