Brilliant Builders: Comparing Materials

This resource contains six activities that link to Everyday Materials, they are designed for use with mixed age groups classes of Year 1 and 2. Activities include:

  • considering the most suitable materials to fix an umbrella – through investigation, using simple equipment to simulate rain. This activity links to a further activity exploring waterproofing.
  • considering the hypothesis ‘Hard materials cannot absorb water’ and making predictions before testing and investigating absorbency.
  • exploring a range of materials and classifying between man-made and natural.

These activities have been provided by Hamilton Trust as part of their mixed age group science lessons.

The Hamilton website also hosts a wealth of other free resources.
