Trends in Physical Properties

These diagnostic questions and response activities (contained in the zip file) support students in being able to:

  • Distinguish a physical from a chemical property
  • Use the location of metals and non-metals in the Periodic Table to predict the properties of an element.
  • Describe the trend in melting point or boiling point of elements in a group on the basis of their state at room temperature.
  • Use data to describe trends in the physical properties of the elements.
  • Use trends to predict the physical properties of an unfamiliar element.

The resources include details of common misconceptions and a summary of the research upon which the resources are based.
