Session 5 - Data Compression Algorithms

This session looks at how images and sound use compression to reduce their size when storing them or transferring them over the Internet or on devices to save space. In the session you will have a look at how an algorithm can be used to compress this data.

All the answers are to be written in the workbook.

  1. Before you start you will need to cut out one of the paper strips.
  2. Now follow the instructions in the workbook for writing in the spaces provided on the paper strips. Look at how the method of folding works for compressing your name. Answer the questions in Task 1 about what you have seen happen.
  3. Task 2 requires 2 sheets of A4 paper to complete. Follow the folding instructions. Check the folding is reversible without any damage. This is a method of compression.
