Introduction to food additives

This resource introduces students to the seven main classes of food additives used in the U.K. food and drinks industry. These comprise of preservatives, sweeteners, anti-caking agents, antioxidants, colours, flavourings and emulsifiers. A short video acts as a starting point to the activities that follow. A series of different text based tasks include analysis of food labels, matching ingredients to products and E numbers to their chemical names. There are opportunities to debate and discuss food safety issues and design a dietary card game.
