Biometrics in schools

This unit introduces students to the different types of biometrics and how they can be used to identify an individual. It highlights how data derived from the measurement of individuals' biological characteristics can be used positively, but also how the collection, control, use and potential misuse of biometric data raises questions for society, including the legal and ethical implications.


In this unit students work together in groups to research and consider the benefits and issues of the use of biometrics, including the technological, ethical and legal issues. They then write a policy for the implementation or expansion of the use of biometric technologies in their school, drawing on their research and the perspectives of various stakeholders. In the final activity students reflect upon the factors needed for successful interdisciplinary collaboration and the benefits of this approach.


This unit has 5 main phases, lasting up to 5 hours in total. Three phases take place in the classroom and the remainder can be completed either independently or as classwork. It contains 12 activities in total and those that require specialist resources are found in the documents listed below along with teacher guidance and a presentation.
