Mini Market - 1 - Deliveries

This activity is an ideal opportunity to use the real-world context of logistics as an application of solving multi-step mathematical problems and evaluating the outcomes. It is one of three mathematical problem-solving activities with a logistics theme which use the context of Norwest, a small chain of mini supermarkets serving small towns in the North West of England.

In this activity students have to schedule the route of a lorry to deliver stock to different locations within a set of given constraints. This task is then be extended by introducing new constraints which means pupils have to adapt their original solution.

The tasks are designed to be tackled as small group activities, encouraging students to discuss the information presented and to argue their case as to the approach which should be taken. Students are expected to communicate their solution in a clear, concise and logical manner. The tasks do not have unique answers so students may produce a range of solutions which are acceptable so long as they communicate the assumptions made and the reasoning behind the decisions they have taken.

The activity includes:

  • teacher notes
  • presentation
  • student activity sheet
  • suggested solutions
