Build or buy?

This series of Core Maths activities involves mortgage finance, interest rates, income tax, national insurance, scheduling, Gantt diagrams and estimation. The tasks can form a large project or be used as stand-alone lessons.

Build or Buy: Teacher Guidance
The teacher guidance package contains a lesson plan which includes prior student knowledge, suggested approaches and possible extension activities. Solutions to the Loans and Mortgage activities are also included, as well as a scheduling Gantt diagram Excel sheet.

Build or Buy: Presentation
This presentation introduces key terms and mortgage details, including information on income tax, PAYE, tax rates and national insurance. Examples of payslips, salaries and mortgage offers are included. The presentation also contains a build your house scheduling task.

Build or Buy: Loans
This Excel spreadsheet helps students calculate and compare the cost of three bank loan offers.

Build or Buy: Mortgages
This Excel spreadsheet helps students calculate and compare the cost of three mortgage loan offers for three different case studies.

Build or Buy: Salary cards and Tax and National Insurance help sheet
Two student handouts to aid students when completing the build or buy activities.

Build or Buy: Assessment
A six question student assessment paper to complement and review skills used in the build or buy activities.
