Better science: making it happen

Most people recognize science education as an essential part of the school curriculum and the education of students growing up in a technological modern world. School science does not thrive in isolation. It should be influenced by other curriculum areas and in turn it should influence them. However, the subject, in some instances, has been isolated due to emphasis placed on its unique and distinctive features.

This has made it difficult for many students to gain a sense of pleasure and excitement from its study. This publication attempts to show science education in the context of the whole school curriculum. It describes staff members' attempts to change their approach to science teaching which will subsequently have an effect upon the rest of the school and community.

The book is divided into sections which present: (1) a review of achievements and shortcomings; (2) governors' views; (3) the review of the secondary science curriculum; (4) the school's plan of action; (5) conclusions; and (6) a glossary. Appendices include policy statements, and a summary of publications in the Better Science series
