Science concept cartoons: set 1 (revised edition)

Created by Brenda Keogh and Stuart Naylor, concept cartoons have been thoroughly researched in classrooms around the world. Simple cartoon-style drawings present learners with their own misconceptions and generate discussion and argument. They are remarkably easy to use in the classroom as a part of normal teaching.

The book and CD both contain 120 concept cartoons covering the main areas of science. Background text, written in pupil-friendly language, is available for each concept cartoon. This suggests possible follow up activities and explains the science behind the different alternatives. A blank speech bubble on each concept cartoons encourages learners to add additional ideas.

'Science concept cartoons' are available as a book or CD-ROM. The book and the CD-ROM both contain the same concept cartoons and background information for teachers. The book can be used to photocopy the concept cartoons. Many teachers find the book useful for lesson planning. The only difference between the book and CD-ROM is the interactivity on the CD-ROM which enables the text in each speech bubble to be changed and modified. concept cartoons can also be printed from the CD-ROM. The book and the CD-ROM must be ordered separately by using the drop down menu alongside the product images at the top of the page.

Concept cartoons are designed to introduce science concepts in everyday settings. Each character has a different opinion about science being discussed. All of the possible answers are plausible and highlight common learner misconceptions. Learners are invited to join in with the discussion happening in the science concept cartoon. This can be in the from of a vote, group discussion or class debate. Each concept cartoons includes ideas for finding out about the science concept in question.
