This is a book about atoms, and their use for man's benefit. Today most people are getting used to the idea of nuclear power, but few realise the value of the nuclear reactor as a source of radioactive isotopes.

Much of the book is devoted to an account of how isotopes affect our daily life; how they can be used to diagnose and cure disease, or help the farmer, the industrialist or the geologist. In industrial applications particularly, a survey shows that the used of isotopes trebled between 1957 and 1961.

The book has been thoroughly revised in its third printing to include the techniques evolved since it was first published. Especially notable are the progress in medical sterilization fro massive sources and the part which isotopes now play in the newly mechanized coal mining industry.
