Introducing Mathematics is designed to give readers the essentials of mathematical literacy.

Sawyer once again presents elementary mathematics in the most graphic and least terrifying way possible. As he early observes, most of us possess a direct vision which allows us to 'see' the smaller numbers. But how to organise in our minds the chaos that lies beyond the smallest numbers is a problem that confronts the entire human race.

In tackling this problem, both for those who find figures fun and those why may be called on to teach, Sawyer offers to a wider circle methods which are already used by many good teachers - methods of visualising, dramatising, and analysing numbers so that the attention and understanding of children can be gained and held.
