This book suggests that the brain-function man has inherited from his biological past has been fundamentally modified by the uniquely human invention of symbols - language, tallies and numbers. Illustrations and examples of man's developing abilities are drawn fro widely diverse fields: from Egyptian hieroglyphics to astronomical measurements, from children's and early man's first drawings and calculations to our present-day fumbling efforts to create a machine in our own likeness.
