Create a tessellation pattern
This activity, from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), introduces students to the idea of creating a rule that can be used to create tessellated patterns, thus understanding what is required to make interlocking units.
Students are provided with triangles, squares and hexagons and are provided with the opportunity to create tessellating patterns. Students are then provided with shapes that do not tessellate and draw up a chart showing the size of the interior angles on each shape and attempt to provide a formula to determine which shapes will and which will not tessellate.
The activity is part of a full set of resources called D30 and is supported by the the video Amazing D30.
