Nuffield Advanced Biology Topic Review: Control of Breathing
The Nuffield Advanced Biology Topic Reviews for students were an integral part of the Advanced Biological Science materials, but each could be read on its own. Thus, students could use them for their current work, or to pursue personal interests.
This topic review dealt in a general way with some aspects of the chemical and nervous mechanisms which interact in the respiratory system. The review showed that people react to changes in their environment as their requirements for energy fluctuate. The control of breathing is one of the ways by which control is exercised on the rate of respiration and hence on the availability of energy. But breathing is only one part of an elaborate system regulating respiration and is itself extremely complex.
