Primary national strategy 'securing level' materials

These materials, from the Primary National Strategy, are intended to support teachers in ensuring that as many students as possible make the progress necessary to reach specific National Curriculum levels in mathematics. The guidance identifies key areas of learning that students need to secure in order to attain that level, key teaching and learning resources and an assessment checklist. In each booklet there is a double-page spread for each of the six areas of mathematics at that level.

Level 1 : • Reading, writing and ordering numbers • Counting and comparing numbers of objects and events • Understanding addition and subtraction • Using known number facts, properties and relationships • Describing shape, position and movement • Measuring and ordering objects, using comparison.

Level 2 • Counting, comparing and ordering numbers • Understanding addition and subtraction and their relationship • Using mental calculation strategies to solve problems involving addition and subtraction • Recognising and describing shapes • Understanding and using standard units and equipment to measure • Organising and interpreting data to answer questions.

Level 3 • Understanding the number system • Securing mental addition and subtraction • Understanding and using multiplication and division • Visualising and classifying shapes • Solving problems involving money and measures • Reading and interpreting tables and graphs.

Level 4 • Securing mental skills • Understanding and using place value • Calculating with money and time • Reading scales • Interpreting tables and graphs • Naming and transforming shapes.

Level 5 • Securing mental and written methods of calculation • Explaining patterns and reasoning • Working with fractions, ratio and proportion • Solving multi-step problems • Using properties of shapes and angles • Interpreting and comparing graphs and outcomes.
