Making a Start

This booklet, the Mathematics Centre at the University of Chichester, is about beginnings. Here teachers and students are tackling unfamiliar interactions as the students are playing games, investigating, discussing and problem solving. The contributing teachers all met initially as members of courses run by the Mathematics Centre, for the Diploma and Advanced Certificate in Mathematical Education led by Adrian Pinnel.

The booklet concentrates on four activites - Consecutive sums, Discs, The answer is ... and Squares - which were presented to the students as open ended starters. Examples of students' work, descriptions and comments of how the activities were presented by the teachers and ways of extending each problem complete the booklet.
