Laboratory Tours: Safety at Work

This resource was produced by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) as part of their 'At Work With Science' materials. In this interactive resource, students are introduced to the legal aspects of the Health and Safety regulations; the concept of risk assessments and how to develop them. Scientific work uses many hazardous materials and processes. However there are very few accidents due to the risk assessments and precautions taken to control these hazards. Tasks in the resource help students to understand and perform a risk assessment. In laboratories, the use of safety signs greatly adds to the identification of hazards and indicate the precautions that should be taken. A presentation takes students on a virtual tour of a corridor and two laboratories to illustrate the use of safety signs in context. The resource contains guidance for teachers and activity sheets for students.
