Beating Bacteria

Produced by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) as part of their 'At Work With Science' series, this resource looks at a hypothetical, but realistic, project aimed at producing a new way of treating bacterial infections. In this activity, students first consider what features are important for an oral treatment before looking at production and marketing timescales. This involves data analysis activities using "by eye" sorting techniques on a small dataset and spreadsheets for a larger dataset.

The activities aim to:

  • develop research and data analysis skills
  • develop decision making skills
  • learn about the critical factors which contribute to making a good medicine
  • learn about bacterial infections and their treatment using antibiotics
  • show how ICT sorting techniques can be used to make sense of large sets of data
