Engineering Processes

This activity, from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), focuses on understanding the concept of modular design and the casting process. The resource is designed to allow students to:

• describe the characteristics of a cast product
• explain why a designer may use a repeating module in a product

The activity includes two short tasks to support students’ understanding of the application of the casting process and the concept of modular design.

Activity one uses the Cast Products presentation to introduce casting as a method of manufacture. Students are required to look at the products that have all been produced by the casting process and explain the advantages of casting.

Activity two uses the Modular Products presentation and asks students to identify a common characteristic of the products shown.

The activity is part of a full set of resources called D30 and is supported by the the video Amazing D30.
