British and International Golf Greenkeepers' Association - STEM Ambassador resources - ages 11 to 14

This set of 4 activities have been designed to provide staff at golf courses who are STEM Ambassadors, in particular greenkeepers, ideas on how to run some STEM based sessions for pupils aged 11 to 14 years of age to highlight the work of greenkeepers and their important role in maintaining a golf course in a good condition for the players whilst helping to protect the environment.

The activities highlight various aspects of STEM such as:

  • maths to calculate large areas
  • habitat management and food webs
  • water management

The aim of these resources is to use STEM activities to introduce pupils to the career opportunities available in golf and the skills and knowledge required to do these jobs. More information about the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Assocation can be found on their website and information about becoming a STEM Ambassador can be found here.

Each activity is designed to take 20 - 30 minutes. Golf course staff can select the activities they feel are most suitable for the age of the pupils on a visit, local circumstances and visit time frames. It is recommended that golf courses liaise with the teacher in charge of the trip at the school who can guide golf courses on the most suitable activities for their pupils.

Please note all the activities are meant as a guide and can be adapted to suit particular pupil groups and locations. However, some activities will not be suitable for every course. For example, some activities need a water-feature like a pond or stream.

All the activities are linked to the national curriculum of all the UK nations and this information can be shared with teachers who will be keen to link the sessions with national curriculum requirements.

There are other activities available in the series for pupils aged 9 to 11 year old.
