Investigating batch production

This activity, from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), focuses on understanding the steps and the decision-making process in the design and build of products.

The resource is designed to allow students to:
• carry out the batch manufacture of a cast product
• be able describe the advantages of batch production

This activity involves using the casting process to make a batch of a product. It should be preceded by the ‘Investigating Batch Production 1’ activity and the ‘Investigating Cast Products’ activity.

The activity is inspired by the casting process used to make the D3O smart material into a ‘usable’ form. This links to industrial practices such as quality control, standardisation and casting manufacture. It is designed to challenge the students by requiring them to apply the knowledge and understanding of engineering materials through a ‘batch’ production experience.

There are two supporting presentations that show examples of cast products and modular products.

The activity is part of a full set of resources called D30 and is supported by the the video Amazing D30.
